'Buffy' Reboot Scrapped Over Disappointing Script

Keep in mind that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" reboot which has been kicking around Hollywood? Contemplate it secured for the time being, a minimum of. The La Occasions reported late a week ago that film writer Whit Anderson the newcomer who'd been hired to reinvent Joss Whedon's broadly admired film, TV and comic series in regards to a teenage vampire slayer and her equally capable buddies continues to be kicked in the project after delivering a script that "fell far lacking anticipation and, ultimately, was declined completely." Fans from the Whedonverse and "Buffy" particularly are unquestionably thrilled through the news from the reboot's apparent demise (the La Times' original report notes that despite the fact that "a brand new author has been searched for," the project in general "might have lost some steam" following Anderson's disappointing effort). And fans aren't the only real ones who're likely honoring, as numerous cast and crew people connected with "Buffy" have previously spoken out against the thought of dealing with that story without Whedon's direct participation. "I believe it is a horrible idea," star Sarah Michelle Gellar stated captured. "To try and perform a 'Buffy' without Joss Whedon, I am talking about that's, like, honestly, to become incredibly non-eloquent: this is the dumbest idea I have heard.Inch Its tough to imagine anybody but Joss getting that towards the screen," former "Buffy" author Marti Noxon told MTV News at the begining of 2011. "I wouldnt desire to be the individual attempting to write it. And That I done the show, but I wouldn't desire to be that [person] since the fans are extremely loyal. 'Prometheus' Teaser Trailer: A New 'Alien' Threat

"Prometheus" isn't an "Alien" prequel, you say? Sure fooled me because the just released trailer for director Ridley Scott's long awaited return to the science fiction arena looks exactly like a continuation of his 1979 horror masterpiece, in the very best of ways. The trailer, which hit the web today, is a teaser in the truest sense which, admittedly, is a little bit frustrating considering the three back-to-back trailer teasers that were previously released this week; their combined runtime extends longer than the full "Prometheus" teaser itself! Regardless of length or structure, the "Prometheus" teaser is a big win for fans who've been waiting for something anything tangible on this project. Here, we get quick, out-of-context glimpses at the epic size and scope of the story, setting and scares, all while the "Prometheus" logo slowly forms on the screen, much in the way the "Alien" title originally manifested. "They went looking for our beginning. What they found could be our end," the teaser warns. Exactly what that end entails? We'll have to wait for that answer until June 8, 2012. In previous "Prometheus" trailer teasers, Scott described the film as "epic, not just by definition of the scale of the sets, but by the very grand ideas and notions, the surprising things that would appear to be small, but yet will be enormous." "I'm thrilled to be doing another science fiction [movie]," he also said. "The cast find an establishment which is not what they expect it to be. What we find in it [are] dangerous elements that, in a heartbeat, are capable of eviscerating all of them." What did you think of the first "Prometheus" teaser? 50 Years Later, What's the Greatest Scene in Judgment at Nuremberg?

So, 1961 gave us some of my favorites, including the torrid Splendor in the Grass and the damn swanky One Hundred and One Dalmatians. (Both feature barking, well-pedigreed protagonists in Pongo and Natalie Wood’s histrionic Deanie Loomis.) But the staggering dramatic achievement of 1961 was neither teenage melodrama nor an animated canine caper — it was Judgment at Nuremberg, Stanley Kramer’s sprawling epic chronicling the post-WWII war trials. Since the movie came out in theaters 50 years ago this week, let’s revisit its staggering scope. What’s its best scene? Apologies to the Blonde Venus herself, Marlene Dietrich, who is committed and harrowing as the widow of an executed German general, and also to Oscar-winning Best Actor Maximilian Schell, who drives the story — but the best scene in Judgment at Nuremberg belongs to Montgomery Clift, who plays a mentally retarded man once subjected to the Nazi sterilization program. First of all, Clift’s post-car accident face is its own sweeping tour de force with terrifying twists and disturbing plot complications. It deserved a Best Screenplay nomination, at least. Second, though by 1961 Clift was a confirmed drug addict who simply couldn’t remember his lines (in fact, Kramer encouraged him to ad-lib when he couldn’t recall exact wording), the old Monty Clift’s intense vulnerability crackles through his hardened visage. In fact, I almost prefer this version of Monty — have you watched A Place in the Sun recently? It does not hold up. Stick with the underrated I Confess for old-world Clift charm. And for the superior Marlene Dietrich performance in a courtroom drama, see Witness for the Prosecution. Such fire. What say you? Do you agree? Does Schell, Spencer Tracy, William Shatner, or a breathtaking Judy Garland deserve the title?

Movember Mustache Movie Madness: Macho Mustaches In The Wild West

by Jim Gibbons Whether you are watching a cattle drive crew prepare some baked beans on the fire or perhaps a shootout before a saloon, chances are you are likely to visit a striking 'stache somewhere for the reason that scene peeking from underneath the brim of the Stetson. For the final Movember Mustache Movie Madness column throughout the worldwide men's health fundraising event where hombres grow mustaches for any month to profit the Livestrong and Cancer Of The Prostate Fundamentals, let us concentrate on probably the most memorable mustaches to mosey over the giant screen. Robert Redford as Henry Longabaugh, a.k.a. the "Sundance Kid," in "Butch Cassidy and also the Sundance Kid" Unarguably among Hollywood's handsomest leading males, people forget that Redford's visual appearance were assisted with a thick mustache in the breakthrough role. And, while we are around the subject of truisms, let us have a look at this macho mustache. This 'stache not just starred within an undisputed western classic, were it not with this below-the-nose mo-growth, there would not be a Sundance Film Festival. During screen the Sundance Kid's 'stache wound up drenched in bloodstream after heading out inside a blaze of glory, it created the fuzzy first step toward work that will help shape the film industry for many years. Nicolas Cage as H.I. McDunnough in "Raising Arizona" Ok, ok, so, it isn't a mustache from the american, before the Coen Siblings come up with a contemporary western masterpiece with "No Country For Old Males," they provided the sand-drenched cult comedy classic "Raising Arizona." Once more, not your classic cowboy 'stache, but it's involved with an over-all Store (a.k.a. small-mart) robbery and throws lower inside a showdown with one bad hombre (a.k.a. chopper-bound fugitive hunter)that's some very good western whisker cred! Matt Damon as LaBoeuf in "True Grit" Onto another wickedly good western from Los Bros Coen, Damon's LaBoeuf the Texas Ranger was certainly another type of cowboy than co-star Shaun Bridges' salty Rooster Cogburn, and not simply if this found his more well-kept mustache compared to Cogburn's unmanageable beard. Clothed in cowhide as well as on the trail of the murderous hired hands, LaBouef might have had some misfortune, but was certainly one tough cowpoke using the face fur to support it. Not necessarily a bad shot either! LaBoeuf's extended 'stache certainly assisted gauge wind speed when taking are designed for a distant target together with his rifle. Bruno Kirby as Erectile dysfunction Furillo in "City Slickers" Not only any guy can tame the Wild West, but when it requires a genuine guy to acknowledge his weak points and rise to some challenge, then Kirby in "City Slickers" is a good example of in which the latter becomes the first kind. Going from soft city slicker to capable cowboy is really a tried and tested tradition from the western, an outing Kirby assisted exemplify within this celebrated comedy. And when you are gonna ride with Curly Washburn, you best bring some machismo towards the table a mustache can help! Mike Elliot as Virgil Earp in "Tombstone," Brigadier General John Buford in "Gettysburg" and also the Stranger in "The Large Lebowski" Last, so the complete opposite of least, comes not just among the finest mustaches in the cowboy genre, butI dare saythe finest mustache in movie history: Mike Elliot's epic 'stache! Require a stern, mustachioed Earp brother? Better get Mike. What about a historic Civil War figure? That 'stache could have been right in your own home within the War for that Union. Once the mustache-lovin' Coen Siblings needed a essential cowboy to narrate "The Large Lebowski" and spend of some sage knowledge on the mug sarsaparilla, who'd they hire? Mike freakin' Elliottobviously. I am talking about, the man even performed a Marlboro Guy analog in "Appreciate Smoking" for screaming noisy! However ,, so what can I only say about this wonderfully macho mustache it does not say by itself? Just gaze into individuals marvelous whiskers which macho visage, contemplate your home within the world and request yourself you skill to become a better guy. Jim Gibbons is definitely an assistant editor at Dark Equine Comics along with a third year Movember participant. You are able to follow his mustache growth progress and donate to his Movember efforts at http://mobro.co/jimgibbons, and follow him on Twitter at @EnemyOfPeanuts.

The Closer Creator James Duff Previews "Necessary Evil"

Kyra Sedgwick As The Closer returns for its last winter season ever (on its way to its series finale next summer), I think it's only right to begin with a seasonal expression of gratitude. We could not be finishing our story on such a high note if you had not come along for the ride.So what can you expect between the first Monday after Thanksgiving and the last Monday in December? The Closer sets off by investigating the death of a high school principal, leading to a stark dramatization of the challenges facing those entrusted with teaching our children. Then, next week, in our hundredth episode, Brenda checks out the death of Santa Claus, who may or may not be a victim of a rival St. Nick (played by the delightful Fred Willard). As the holiday draws nearer, Brenda's parents, Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin, make a blitz visit to deliver both gifts and a bit of shocking news that upturns their daughter's life. We follow Mom and Dad with a special guest appearance by Elizabeth Perkins, who drives our next-to-last episode into one of the darkest places The Closer has ever gone. Finally, we end with Brenda confronting the murder of Turell Baylor. Will she step aside, as she did before, and let someone else do the dirty work for her? Or will she bring Turell's murderer to justice, and live with the consequences? As always, we consider the middle five episodes - the island between our two summers - the perfect vehicle for experimentation and out-of-the-box offerings. You may wonder, with the show preparing to make its final bow next summer, why we would bother with innovation. In our view, The Closer has not only been a commercial opportunity, but an artistic endeavor: a chance to live our creative lives in an environment of learning. Even if we don't always succeed in making the show better, we are hopeful you will appreciate our attempt. What else can I tell you about these middle five episodes? Brenda's peerless attorney, Gavin Q. Baker, returns to do battle with her legal nemesis, Peter Goldman. Captain Raydor searches tirelessly for the leak in the LAPD's Major Crimes Division. The federal lawsuit moves to a conclusion. And Brenda Leigh Johnson finds that sometimes, even when you win, you lose. After I finish this little introduction, I move immediately to writing the very last episode of our series. This bittersweet project marks the end of a long and immensely satisfying collaboration with a terrific cast, an unbelievably dedicated crew and a group of writers and producers I deeply admire. Hopefully, if nothing else, we will finish with as much good fortune as we began.Wish me luck! - James Duff

Samuel French Launches Downloadable Plays

Last April, I pleaded my situation that the time had come for stars to invest their hard-gained ducats on the tablet pc. My reasoning was that because of so many incredibly helpful actor-oriented applications available, it had been well worth the expense, and a minimum of a part of that expense might be a legitimate tax break. Individuals reasons are going to have a back chair to an alternative one, however: the lengthy-looked forward to arrival of downloadable plays. When you look at this, writer Samuel French may have begun offering 400 plays for download, offered through Apple's iBookstore. Through the finish of the season, the organization may have 1,000 titleswhich it calls ePlaysfor purchase, states Katy DiSavino, Samuel French's marketing and social networking supervisor. However the longtime play writer is hardly alone in offering downloadable drama, as Dramatists Play Service intends to unveil its very own digital game titles over the following three several weeks. Buying plays is a fast and simple download in the company's website (world wide web.dramatists.com). They will be offered within the broadly used EPub format, which works with about 50 e-book visitors, based on Michael Q. Fellmeth, Dramatists Play Service's v . p . for guides also it.The 2 companies' plays can look a little different in your tablet or e-readers. You'll have the ability to view your Samuel French purchases in your iTunes library. For the Dramatists Play Service game titles, you will employ something known as Adobe Digital Models, a totally free application that functions greatly like iTunes in the manner it organizes and shows the plays you've downloaded. Ultimately, the consumer experience can be really similar. If you are discussing whether or not to buy an iPad or perhaps an e-book readers, it might simply come lower to money. An apple ipad 2 begins at $499, as the fundamental type of Barnes & Noble's e-readers, the Nook, can be purchased for $139. Whether it's mainly a play readers you are searching for, the amounts may speak on their own.Dramatists Play Service's digital plays will definitely cost just like the printed models, states Fellmeth, "therefore the standard acting-edition cost is going to be $8, and librettos for musicals is going to be $9." This really is consistent with Samuel French's prices, I ought to add.Imagine: a bigger font size (nearly any size you would like), lightweight, with no wasted paper. Furthermore, all pills and e-book visitors should have the ability to read PDF files, to help you skip making a 1-time-use script for your forthcoming new-play reading through. For me personally, that accumulates to a little of digital paradise.Other play marketers follows during these digital actions. And never a minute too early.

The 3 dimensional journey of "Immortals"

The producers of Relativity Media's "Immortals," which opened up as much as some better-than-expected $32 million the 2009 weekend, always intended for the film being released in 3d. Once production got continuing with Tarsem pointing it absolutely was apparent that aside from a small little bit of footage the film might be shot on 2D after which be changed in to the stereo system system medium. Cinematographer Brendan Galvin - who's also shooting Tarsem's Snow White-colored film "Mirror Mirror" - entrusted lots of that task with a fellow d.p., David Stump, which has the borrowed funds of senior stereographer round the film. Galvin and Stump both spoken to Variety's Inside Production's Peter Caranicas in regards to the believing that went to the shooting and conversion in the swords-and-sandals actioner.***Peter Caranicas: How extended possibly you've labored with Tarsem?Brendan Galvin: Over 2 decades, mainly on ads. Caranicas: Discuss how you shot "Immortals."Galvin: We shot everything digitally round the Genesis camera system from Panavision. We shot many tests before identifying if you should shoot real 3d to be able to shoot 2D and execute a conversion. We ended up shooting just little part of the film on 3d the comfort can be a conversion. One of the factors was how rapidly Tarsem likes to work. Our schedule was very challenging if this involves the amount of material we required to shoot inside the time available. Lots of people say there's virtually no time difference shooting 3d, some say there's 10% difference i am there's a lot of difference.Caranicas: How rapidly does Tarsem work?Galvin: You will discover times when we now have done somewhat at work daily, and in some cases when he's just manic, go, go, go. I like to make use of him when he's working faster. He'll get another energy. I am unable to exactly explain it. While he shoots, he puts the film together within the mind. I have not met anyone who it like him. He'll remember visual things, every shot perform around the film, exactly. Caranicas: What's your thing at conversion versus. stereo system system shooting?Galvin: I've come across both positive and negative conversions and positive and negative native 3d shooting. Personally, after transporting this out conversion, I'd perform same factor again. I'm not to imply I wouldn't shoot 3d with stereo system system cameras. I will tell situations where that could be a better to do. But relating to this particular film, while using elements we'd, that wasn't what you would like. I don't regret your final decision we made.Caranicas: The thing that was the intent within the start?Galvin: It absolutely was always to produce in 3d, when we taken photos of in 2D we succeeded understanding that. In my opinion 3d remains a medium completely within the infancy, even though it's been around for donkey's years. People continue to be learning a good deal about what's possible and what's not. They're learning an entirely new language for filmmaking. Caranicas: Where perhaps you have shoot "Immortals"?Galvin: We shot 100% in-studio in Montreal. We did lots of greenscreen work, but we did have sets. The greenscreen was largely for set extensions. We shot for 62 days, so for approximately three several days enabling for weekends. We finished noisy . This summer time, 2010.Caranicas: How involved had you experienced publish and DI?Galvin: A good deal. Because i had been shooting digitally we preferred to take full advantage of what digital can offer over film. One factor we are able to perform was setup our validating suite inside the studio where i had been shooting, and then we stood a color correction suite together with digital projection, and several nights we seen dailies there. We did fundamental color correction round the set after we were shooting.Caranicas: Who handled the conversion?Galvin: Most likely probably the most primary reasons was to offer the whole process supervised having a cinematographer. David Stump handled everything controlling a team of people. The fact he's a d.p. was greatly advantageous, technically and esthetically. David would perform some things and suggest to them in my opinion and Tarsem. When he saw that which you loved if this involves depth, perspective, convergence, etc., he'd then begin using that. More youthful crowd brought some very helpful ideas. The brief was this must be considered a really comfortable 3d experience. We wanted people to forget that they're watching 3d.---Chris Caranicas: Had you been a stereographer just in publish?David Stump: Yes, only in publish, I wasn't part of the photography process.Caranicas: Which kind of look had you been going after?Tree stump: One of the obligations we made to Tarsem wound up being to supply the figures "human volume" to ensure that they didn't appear like flat pressboard cutouts put in space. Which kind of volume is really difficult to achieve in the conversion. We paid out additional care and attention paid out to putting things in a good option, and achieving things built with volume - quantity of the figures and quantity of the region. That has been a achieve for a lot of previous conversions but we showed up at a significant high mark if this involves achieving volume in this conversion.Caranicas: How have you accomplish this?Sapling stump: You have to create depth maps including roundness in faces as well as the background sets. You must do not just eliminate a wall and set it thorough. We added indentations for home home windows, entrance doorways, architectural features. We did lots of depth mapping in more detail - I've always observed the possible lack of it on other conversions.Caranicas: Where perhaps you have perform work?Stump: The lion's share visited Prime Focus. They did a lot of the be employed in India. Small sections received to 3DRevolution in Pasadena and Mikros Image in France.Caranicas: Where perhaps you have spend your main time?Stump: My team which i spent several several days in Mumbai, too just like Paris, Montreal and L.A.Caranicas: Goes the conversion route pricey? Stump: Not always. It absolutely was probably ultimately cheaper to change instead of shoot native 3d, particularly considering the variety of cameras, the amount of technology as well as the longer schedule (needed) to shoot in 3d. And you also may have required to knock Tarsem lower from 60 designs every day to twenty, wonderful people accessories standing neighborhood for your fight scenesCaranicas: Did the greenscreen work increase the risk for conversion any simpler?Stump: No, it absolutely was another variable that handled to obtain somewhat harder. To have the ability to properly covert a greenscreen vfx shot you'll need the best version in the shot done, so that it just pressed really people shots much much deeper to the schedule - which ultimately helps it be harder to offer the 3d consistent from shot to shot and scene to scene.Caranicas: Was the color correction done following a conversion?Stump: In this situation, yes, since it might be an active cut - the edit wasn't locked until after i came back from my last trip to Mumbai. There has been several things I desired to re-jigger new shots beginning the pipeline as late as September of the season, therefore i needed to take part in the color correction process. Caranicas: The facts of a d.p. that best qualifies him just like a stereographer?Stump: Possibly the quantity of obsessive-compulsive image manipulation and control that d.p.'s are designed for. The particular advantage of conversion could it be gives you is a great deal of control you do not have in natively shot 3d. In the event you shoot something in 3d and you also aren't dedicated to changing anything, and you have a shot wrong, there is not a good deal that can be done relating to this. You can't return and say, If only to drag the cameras closer together making vid less deep scene. (All you want to do is) use changing the shot - discard one eye and convert another.Caranicas: Is 3d not going away soon?Sapling stump: Some predict is lasts, others it won't. In the last 10 years because the roll-out of digital cinema everyone has converted into a prophet saying film is dead, film lasts forever, 3d lasts forever, digital will not ever gain popularity, digital might be the near future, etc. Everybody likes to express "I stated so," so people are earning an array of predictions and then on they'll take out correct ones. Immortals #1 With The-So $32M Domestic But $36M Foreign, Jack And Jill $26M

SUNDAYAM,3RDUPDATE: Latest Top10 grosses showbetter United States box office than formerly thought because of the Veterans Day holiday weekendwhen school has gone out in 60% of the nation. What's promising isa break from slouching attendance having a $137M total moviegoing weekend, up+18% from this past year. However the not so good news is the fact that these movies continue to be way underperforming the things they must have done on a journey weekend. That’s because they major studio photos were certainly not crowd-pleasers. Just take a look at their Rotten Tomato plants scores. However the question for you is why Hollywood launched two youthful male-skewing movies the weekend immediately after two major game titles were launched. Anecdotal evidence would be that the men were otherwise engaged. Full analysis coming: 1. Immortals three dimensional (Relativity) NEW [3,112 Theaters] Friday $14M, Saturday $10M, Weekend $32M Richard Branson didn’t waste whenever blogging to his peeps today: “Congratulations to Jason and also the whole team at Virgin Created for Immortals, their follow-up film to Unlimited, going right to number 1 in the box office a few days ago. Jammy bastards!!” He’s nearly as good at spinning underwhelming box office as Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh. The fact is Immortals began out slow: it did an uninteresting $1.4M in Thursday night time gross from roughly 900 locations then broadened runs and grossesfor Friday but lost -30%Saturday.Pic eked out a $30+M weekend bow, the industry rarity nowadays. However, you also should be aware that Immortals is really a 300-clone yet didn’t make even45% from the $70.8M opening amount the original 2D movie did. Despite the greater three dimensional ticket prices. Immortals must have made $50+M, folks, because of the genre and promotion. was absolutely a large success, but we're inside a different economy, marketplace, and season,” a Relativity professional explained Friday evening. “Young males happen to be challenging in the last year. Its a substantial accomplishment that people got them. We're well situated to become the next greatest R-ranked film this season and also the greatest R-ranked action film this season. This can be a win for all of us.” Obviously, Relativity is renowned for its bluster. It claims reduced risk from foreign pre-sales around the allegedly $75M-allocated film. Then show me why, for just two years, Relativity was telling everyone as well as their mother the budget ofImmortals was $120M. (Don’t trust me? Return and perform a Search). It offered the filminternationally to foreign purchasers having a budget of $120M.Now, all asudden, your budget is $75 million due to what Relativity states are tax savings for shooting and doing publish productionin Montreal? Puh-leeze. Audiences gave Immortals a ‘B’ CinemaScore but Rotten Tomatoesrecorded just37% reviews that are positive. That’s lousy thinking about the pic is fromthe producers of 300 (Mark Canton, Gianni Nunnari and Ryan Kavanaugh). Yet Relativity attempts to claim this new epic adventure is “completely original — it is not based on a comic isn't with different novel and isn't a follow up.”Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Autumn) directed andCharles Parlapanides & Vlas Parlapanides would be the credited screenwriters.Marketing was aggressive and for that reason costly. Itkicked off at Wondercon in April, then Comic-Disadvantage in This summer, and what the galleries states would be a “barrage” ofpublicity media looks, in-theater marketing, outside advertising, and radio/TV spots.Close ties/alliances includedBest Buy.Relativity is the owner of worldwide privileges to Immortals Lionsgate handled foreign sales. Alliance Films is delivering in Canada. About 70% of locationsplayed the film in three dimensional. Pic opened up in over 35 worldwide areas including China, United kingdom, Germany, Italia, Japan, Columbia and Russia. Current believed weekend box office is roughly $36M with numerous areas (including Indonesia and India) still to report.Relativity states this wasthe first title delivering through Sky Land, its partnership with IDG and Saif Partners in China.Their email list of foreign output partners and extra areas is really as lengthy as my arm, including Austria/Constantin,Bulgaria/MGN,China/Sky Land,Finland/Nordisk,Germany/Constantin,A holiday in greece/Village,India/Soundspace,Israel/Forum,Italia/RAI,Japan/Universal,Netherlands/A-Film,Russia/CIS/MGN,Romania/MGN,Nigeria/Nu Metro,Columbia/Next,Sweden/Nordisk,Poultry/Aqua,United kingdom/Universal,U . s . Arab Emirates/Gulf,Malaysia/PT Parkit,Taiwan/SSG. 2. Jack And Jill (The new sony Pictures) NEW [3,438 Theaters] Friday $9.8M,Saturday $9.6M,Weekend $26M The new sony Pictures’ Jack And Jill starring Adam Sandler was hard-pressed to equal his usual $30+M opening comedies. (Maybe moviegoers aren’t as moronic as Hollywood thinks they're.) Rotten Tomato plants gave this poultry merely a 3% positive score.Picreceived a ‘B’ CinemaScore but additionally an ‘A-” from audiences under age 18. After delivering a trailer which was as viciously criticized when i’ve seen on Deadline, The new sony is relieved this Christmas-designed PG movieat least opened up. So Adamis free. “It’s a household film therefore it will have to some better multiple with the season than his normal movies,” one rival studio professional informs me. However, you’ve gotta question if Sandler is creating a Jim Carrey problem and also the public stop supporting him if he’s in a lot of stinkers such as this. The new sony is sort of alarmed that Adam keeps working with similar cronies in nearly every film, however the studio may also’t tell its lengthy-time golden goose Happy Madison to prevent lounging eggs. The new sony sources claim the film is made for $80M and, unlike many comics,Adam’s filmsdo healthy business overseas while he’s labored at being a foreign draw. “So we are who is fit when all is stated and done,” the studio assures me. Unless of course moviegoers keep rememberingwhat a suckfest it was and may’t have that bad taste from their mouths when theythink of having to pay for an additional film. Folks, it’sreleases such as this which are killing thebiz. Nevertheless, The new sony did its usual stellar job building awareness with this poultry directed by Dennis Dugan andproduced bySandler, Jack Giarraputo, and Todd Garner. The script os credited to Steve Koren & Adam Sandler with story by Ben Zook. The advertising campaign specific Sandler’s core fans, and also the concept was simple to grasp. (Uh, which was the issue…) Adam did his usualplethora of looks and promotions to supportthe pic.Additionally towards the items you’d expect (Leno, Kimmel, Conan, Letterman, Today Show, Regis and Kelly, ad nauseum), younger crowd recorded an intro for Game one of the American League Championship Series, and did a current episode of Dr. Phil featuring the actual existence twins in the movie. There have been integrationswith The X Factor and Survivor: South Off-shore,interstitials on Nickelodeon, tie-inches on Comedy Central in addition to promotions on The best spinner's, ABC Family, and Univision, amongst others. Online The new sony heldan awkward brother or sister photo contest (awkwardfamilyphotos.com) and networked on social networking with Sandler’sextensive fanbase, including his25 million buddies on Facebook. 3. Puss In Boots three dimensional (DreamWorks Animation/Componen) Week 3 [3,903 Theaters] Friday $8M,Saturday $9.8M,Weekend $25M,Cume $108.8M Anotherstrong +23% hold for that catbecause Puss In Boots clearly has nine lives. Before The Muppets open next weekend, that's. 4. Tower Heist (Universal) Week 2 [3,370 Theaters] Friday $4.8M,Saturday $5.5M,Weekend $13.1M (-45%), Cume $43.8M That superficially appears just like a good hold. Before you realize Tower Heist wayunderperformed last week therefore it’s hardly impressive.Brett Ratner’s lousy week just just get lousier. 5. J. Edgar (Warner Bros) NEW – opened up Wednesday [1,901 Theaters] Friday $3.5M, Saturday $4.4M,Weekend $11.4M, Cume $11.5M Hollywood was disappointed there wasn’ta more powerful per screen average for Clint Eastwood’s and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-buzzed biopic. But top experts on Rotten Tomato plants remarkably gave J. Edgar only 55% reviews that are positive, and audiences merely a ‘B’ CinemaScore. MORE 6. Harold & Kumar three dimensional Christmas (NL/Warner Bros) Week 2 [2,875 Theaters] Friday $2.2M, Saturday $2.4M,Weekend $5.9M (-64%),Cume $23.2M 7. Over Time (Fox) Week 3 [3,127 Theaters] Friday $1.5M, Saturday $1.7M,Weekend $4.1M, Cume $30.6M 8. Paranormal Activity 3 (Vital) Week 4 [2,776 Theaters] Friday $1.3M, Saturday $1.6M,Weekend $3.6M,Cume $100.8M 9. Footloose (Vital) Week 5[2,215 Theaters] Friday $1M, Saturday$1.2M,Weekend $2.7M, Cume $48.8M 10. Real Steel (DreamWorks/Disney) Week 6[1,758 Theaters] Friday $650K, Saturday $850K,Weekend $2M, Cume $81.7M 4 PM: Because it’s Veteran’s Day, it’s another type of Friday with school in 60% of the nation. And So I’m reluctant calling anything off matinees and can hold back until tonight firms up. But when current trends continue,The new sony Pictures’ Jack And Jill starring Adam Sandler looks hard-pressed to equal his usual $30+M opening comedies. (Maybemoviegoers aren’t as moronic as Hollywood thinks they're.)As the 300-clone Immortals, the3D pic from Relativity, might not makemore than40% ofthe $70.8M opening weekend amount the original 2D movie did. Immortals at this time is searching tobe the #1 movie in the United States box office but “could be anybody’s ballgame tonight,” an adversary studio professional cautions me. Immortals did $1.4M in night time gross from roughly 900 locations that is so-so. However, Warner Bros’ J. Edgar is searching in a strong per screen average for Clint Eastwood’s and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-buzzed biopic.5 Best such as this but sign in later: 1. Immortals three dimensional (Relativity) $28M believed weekend from three,112 Theaters for debut 2. Jack And Jill (The new sony Pictures) $25M believed weekend from three,438Theaters for debut 3. Puss In Boots three dimensional(DreamWorks Animation/Vital) $22M believed weekendfrom 3,903 Theaters for Week 3 4.J. Edgar (Warner Bros) $18M believed weekend from1,901 Theaters after opening Wednesday in limited run 5. Tower Heist (Universal) $15M believed weekendfrom 3,370 Theaters for Week 2

Darren Aronofsky's Anti-Meth PSAs: Requiem Redux

Darren Aronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream alone might’ve been enough to scare most folks away from hard drugs for forever, but it came out all the way back in 2000, when today’s teenagers were mere toddlers. So as part of the public service program The Meth Project, which seeks to educate (or at least frighten the bejeezus out of) would-be first-time drug users, Aronofsky stepped in to direct four TV spots highlighting the nightmarish consequences of meth use. BE SCARED, KIDS. Aronofsky’s new PSAs are fairly simple, sharing a few key elements: He begins in close-up on the faces of his young teen subjects in quiet slo-motion repose, confronting his potential viewer with a face that reflects their own. Then he pulls back as hell breaks loose, revealing the horrors that meth use can inflict upon the lives of promising, fresh-scrubbed young persons: Ghastly skin lesions, horrific suicide attempts, physical abuse of/by loved ones, emergency room freakouts. This is what the American Skins should’ve been like. Warning: Semi-disturbing. But that’s the point. The Meth Project is an ongoing campaign that previously tapped other high profile filmmakers to create spots. Each “Wave” of shorts approaches the subject with a theme or tagline, showcasing different styles. You can find an extensive collection of previous shorts by Aronofsky (Wave 3 & 6), Inception DP Wally Pfister (Wave 5), Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu (Wave 4), and Tony Kaye (Wave 1 & 2) at the Meth Project Foundation website. For more information on the campaign and new website, head to www.MethProject.org. [The Meth Project via Next Movie]

Warner Bros. Pulling 'Harry Potter' DVDs from Circulation After Dec. 29

Last week, it was reported that the six-minute prologue for 'The Dark Knight Rises' would premiere with prints of 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' when that film debuted in IMAX on Dec. 16. The good news: the rumor has been confirmed by AMC Theaters! The bad news: there's a twist. "The six-minute 'Dark Knight Rises' prologue footage will only be shown on the higher resolution 70mm IMAX screens," said a blog post by AMC. "Not the digital IMAX screens." Which probably doesn't mean all that much to you, other than that some will get to see the footage and some won't. AMC will offer a full list of theaters as Dec. 16 draws closer. [AMC] "Will Aaron Sorkin take on Steve Jobs?" Good question, L.A. Times! Considering Sony purchased the rights to the Walter Isaacson biography on Jobs, and considering that Sorkin wrote 'The Social Network' and co-wrote 'Moneyball' for the studio, let's assume the odds are pretty good that he will. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Will Re-Team for Whitey Bulger Movie

Back in that long-forgotten year of 1997, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck were the bestest of beffies. The adorable scamps -- and lifelong friends -- co-wrote 'Good Will Hunting' together, co-starred in the film and won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Since then they've obviously remained close, but never really collaborated again (though they did appear together in 'Dogma' and 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back' for Kevin Smith). It was rumored that Matt and Ben would re-team for 'The Trade,' about a pair of real-life wife-swapping NY Yankees from the '70s, but with that having hit some legal snags, the pals have focused on a new project: the life and arrest of Whitey Bulger. "We're doing a Whitey Bulger movie," Damon told GQ about the infamous South Boston mob boss who had been on the lam for 16 years before his arrest in California over the summer. "Warner's got it for us." That would be Warner Bros., which is a studio where Affleck has planted his flag as a director. He's already done 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town' for the studio and has 'Argo' coming next fall; he was even tapped by Warner Bros. executives as their choice to direct 'The Stand.' Affleck will handle filmmaking duties on the Bulger project, with Damon starring and 'Boardwalk Empire' creator Terence Winter writing the script. "There are a couple of competing movies and I don't think it's been announced yet that we're doing it," Damon said. "But the sooner it's announced the better, just because everyone else will back off, hopefully. I'm really excited about it." Damon has some familiarity with the Bulger story; Jack Nicholson's character in 'The Departed' -- which co-starred the former Will Hunting -- was partially inspired by the gangster. Per Deadline, he'll actually play Bulger, while Affleck's brother Casey will have a role in the film as well. "We've heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen," said Affleck. REVIEW: Gritty Miss Bala Shows Some Leg, and Also Shows Restraint

Miss Bala is a fairly straightforward story, told in a reasonably straightforward way: A young woman in Mexico longs to win a beauty pageant as a way of making life better for herself, her father and her younger brother. But before she can make it to the first round, she runs afoul of a group of gangsters who use her — and her alluring but unassuming beauty — as a means to their own devious ends. Miss Bala — which was made by the young Mexican director Gerardo Naranjo and written by Naranjo and Mauricio Katz — is just stylish enough, a picture that doesn’t let flash get in the way of its storytelling. It sometimes leads us down some all-too-familiar corridors — if you’ve seen one Mexican drug cartel, you’ve seen ‘em all. But there’s always something to look for in the face of Stephanie Sigman as Laura Gerrerro, the young woman who one afternoon sneaks away from her family’s modest home, a stretchy “competition” dress stashed away in the plastic bag she’s carrying, in the hopes of making it past the first cut in the Miss Baja California pageant. Laura has a partner in this relatively innocent crime, her best friend Suzu. After the two earn the OK from the pageant’s organizer to return the next day, Suzu coaxes Laura out to a nightclub to celebrate. It turns out the club is filled with American DEA agents, the target of a bunch of masked baddies who storm the place. Laura survives the ambush, but she loses track of Suzu, and when she sets out to locate her friend, the thugs — led by a wily, perversely seductive fox named Lino (Noe Hernandez) — recognize her and press her into service in their war against those meddlesome law-enforcement officials. Laura, leggy and doe-eyed, tries to elude her new friends, but they keep finding her, enlisting her for one dangerous errand after another. Lino pulls some greasy strings to make her big dream come true, but the triumph is a false one, just a necessary step in Lino’s plan to snuff out a general who’s been instrumental in the big drug crackdown. Miss Bala (the title is a play on words, translating to “Miss Bullet”) is inspired by real events, but even within its unflinching grittiness, there’s something dreamlike — or perhaps nightmarelike — about it. Naranjo keeps the action tense but understated; instead of allowing explosions and shootouts to pile up, he rations them in taut doses. There’s nothing particularly daring about Miss Bala beyond its restraint, although in the contemporary movie climate, that’s probably daring enough by itself. And Sigman never overplays, either: Her character is an innocent caught in a web of cruelty and greed, and she behaves instinctively and sometimes irrationally. Laura keeps scrambling away from her sweaty, stubbly, scarred captors, but you can see she never gives a thought to where she might possibly run to — the creeps always have a way of reeling her back in. Still, Sigman doesn’t play Laura as a shrinking naif. There’s vitality and selfless valor in the way Laura lets her fear — not just for herself, but for her family — motivate her. Sigman’s enormous eyes have the capacity to take in the horrors that surround her character; she can’t help but see them. Yet Sigman doesn’t play Laura as a character undone by lost innocence. There’s a mournful undercurrent to Miss Bala; it isn’t exactly a movie where good triumphs over evil. But somehow Laura — after being abused and misused — keeps picking herself up and walking forward. Single-minded and purposeful, she won’t stop competing in her own internal pageant, even though she knows that damned crown is hard-won.

Jane Fonda on Discovering, Losing and Re-Discovering Love for Acting (Audio)

Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images A strong case could be made that Jane Fonda is -- with the possible exception of Meryl Streep -- America's greatest living film actress. She has given standout performances in dozens of memorable movies from across the genres over the past half-century, many of which merit a spot in any pantheon of American cinema, including: Edward Dmytryk's Walk on the Wild Side (1962), Elliot Silverstein's Cat Ballou (1965), Sydney Pollack's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1966), Arthur Penn's The Chase (1966), Gene Saks's Barefoot in the Park (1967), Roger Vadim's Barbarella (1968), Alan J. Pakula's Klute (1971), Fred Zinnemann's Julia (1977), Hal Ashby's Coming Home (1978), James Bridges's The China Syndrome (1979), Colin Higgins's Nine to Five (1980), Mark Rydell's On Golden Pond (1981), and Norman Jewison's Agnes of God (1985). Thanks to her landmark performances in the aforementioned Klute and Coming Home, she is one of only 12 members of the club of two-time best actress Oscar winners. The other 11: Luise Rainer, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Glenda Jackson, Sally Field, Jodie Foster, and Hilary Swank. TORONTO REVIEW: Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding And today, at the age of 73 -- and despite taking a 16-year hiatus from the big screen, spanning Martin Ritt's Stanley & Iris (1989) through Robert Luketic's Monster-in-Law (2005) -- she is the only septuagenarian female who can get a movie made simply because she has agreed to appear in it. Case-in-point:Bruce Beresford's Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding, Fonda's fourth post-comeback film, which shot in upstate NY in July 2010, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and is still seeking U.S. distribution. In it, Fonda plays Grace, a fun-loving, pot-smoking, chicken-raising, pottery-throwing, sexually-active hippie. Oh, and one more thing: the character played by the sex kitten of Barbarella and sexy call girl of Klute is -- get this -- a grey-haired grandmother! One day, her long-estranged daughter (Catherine Keener), a conservative lawyer, shows up at her home with her own two kids in tow (the girl is played by Elizabeth Olsen of Martha Marcy May Marlene, the boy by Nat Wolff of Nickelodeon's The Naked Brothers Band), seeking refuge after separating from her husband (Kyle MacLachlan). Over the course of their time together, Grace teaches all three of them to loosen up, helps each to find a bit of romance (Olsen with Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford) during their stay, and works to earn her daughter's forgiveness. (She also has several lines of dialogue -- one including the phrase "cock-blocking" -- that made this writer literally laugh-out-loud.) PHOTOS: Toronto Film Festival: 13 Films to Know When you think about it, Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding is a lot like another film that is also close to Fonda's heart: On Golden Pond (1981), in which she shared the screen with her legendary father Henry Fonda for the first and only time, and in so doing helped to improve their long-strained relationship. (He won the best actor Oscar for the film and died just months later.) Both films are fundamentally about a parent and child struggling to communicate after many years of distance bet. In the earlier film, Jane played a daughter struggling to communicate with a distant parent; now she's playing a parent struggling to communicate with a distant daughter. And, as I noted in an early post, Henry was only three years older when Pond was released than his daughter is now -- 76 vs. 73. ("When I read your article [pointing out these similarities] it blew me away," Fonda remarked to me, insisting that she hadn't previously noticed them.) STORY: Toronto 2011: The 10 Most Buzzed-About Films That Still Haven't Found a U.S. Distributor Fonda was actually scheduled to attend TIFF to promote Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding, but she developed stomach pains and was advised against traveling (she's fine now), and therefore had to cancel the handful of interviews that she had agreed to grant in conjunction with it. This disappointed journalist pestered her publicist to reschedule his as a phoner, however, and Fonda graciously agreed. When I first rung her, she asked if I'd mind calling her back in just a few more minutes; interestingly, when I did, she explained to me that she had been "coaching a little girl over the phone because she's about to try out for a Robert Redford movie." (She herself shared the screen with Redford 45 years ago in The Chase, 44 years ago in Barefoot in the Park, and 32 years ago in The Electric Horseman.) Once our own conversation got underway, Fonda devoted a generous amount of time and a considerable amount of thought to answering my questions about her past, present, and future... Jane Fonda 'Peace, Love & Misunderstanding' by The Hollywood Reporter Some highlights... On getting into acting "The first time I ever acted was when I played a boy in a religious pageant in church... I started studying acting because I got fired as a secretary and I had to move out of my father's house and earn a living... I became a model to pay for acting class, and started studying with Lee Strasberg." On first realizing she was an actor "It was when Lee Strasberg saw me do my first scene and said to me, 'You know, I see a lot of people coming through here. I just want to tell you something, Jane: you have real talent' -- when he said that to me, I knew what my calling was. I needed someone who was not my parent or an employee to tell me that. And Lee Strasberg did that for me." On her breakthrough role "I had an unusual career... I started with a starring role... and I didn't enjoy it at all. I did not enjoy movie acting I'd say until Klute. Well, no, that's not true. Barefoot in the Park I had a blast making... I didn't feel like I found my sea-legs until I did Klute." On fame "It's very different now. There's a cult of celebrity, you know, partly because of the gossip magazines and the paparazzi. Young people coming up now -- everything they do is under scrutiny. I mean, people become celebrities who've never done anything! It's all about celebrity, and that's really bad -- it's a shame. I don't think it represents very good values. These are not good role models for our young people. That was not the way it was when I came up. There were no paparazzi. There were no gossip rags. There were movie magazines, but they contained headshots of the star with a very careful bio [laughs], , and that was about it. I was lucky. I came in before all this stuff happened." On her first realization that she was famous "I guess I knew I was famous when I was opening in a play on Broadway and had two movies playing at the same time." On her favorite role "I think the character that I played that I loved the most is a character named Gertie Nevels in The Dollmaker [1984], for which I won an Emmy. It was made for ABC... That's my favorite character that I ever played -- I played a hillbilly -- and I was proud of that. Very proud. But [the part of call girl Bree Daniels in] Klute is right up there alongside that. On the 1960's "I was never a hippie. I was an activist, but I was never a hippie. I didn't do the tie-die, pot-smoking, psychedelic -- all that stuff. I never did that. On what led to her 16-year hiatus from Hollywood "Towards the end of my forties, which corresponded to the end of the eighties, I was not a happy camper. I felt very bad about myself; I was in a marraige that was failing; I saw no future for myself -- I was miserable, and I found it very, very, very difficult to act under those circumstances. I was shut down, so I said, 'I'm gonna get out of the business. I'm gonna become a full-time environmental activist. I'll leave Hollywood.' I bought a piece of property in New Mexico, and right around that time I met Ted Turner -- so I ended up owning New Mexico! [laughs]... Anyway, I wouldn't have been able to be married to him and work, but I was planning to not work anyway, so it's not like he got me to quit -- but I didn't need to work when I was married to Ted. When he and I divorced, I began writing my memoirs, which took me five years, and that was one of the most important things I have ever done in my life. When I was about a year from finishing them, I realized I'm a very different person now than I was 15 years ago. I could find joy in acting again -- I knew it in my bones. And I had appeared at the Oscars to present an award -- I had my haircut and I looked pretty great -- and CAA took me lunch and said, 'We want to represent you.' And I said, 'Well, I'm not sure I'm gonna work again.' But then the script Monster-in-Law came along, and I realized that this was just perfect." On choosing Monster-in-Law (2005) for her comeback film "First of all, I'd never played a character like that. Second of all, because I'd spent 10 years with Ted Turner, I knew that I could play her, because I learned from Ted, being up-close and personal, that being over-the-top can be nice and endearing. [laughs]... My book came out the same time the movie came out -- I'm the only person that's ever had a number one book and a number one movie out at the same time. The critics hated it -- "Why would Jane want to come back after 16 years in, kind of, a popcorn movie?" But it was actually a very brilliant move on my part because young people came to see the movie because they wanted to see [Jennifer Lopez], and they discovered me, because I'm the one that had the funnier role. And so, you know, when I walk down the street now, I see young girls coming towards me because they recognize me and they get excited, and I know exactly what they're gonna say. Forget Klute, forget Coming Home, forget Julia -- 'Monster-in-Law! I've seen it 15 times! It's my all-time favorite movie!'... So I think it was a smart move. And what I realized during that movie is that I have found joy in acting again -- I think I'm better than I ever have been -- and I look forward to more." On what she's doing next "I'm writing three new books and I have two new DVDs coming out!" Jane Fonda Peace, Love & Misunderstanding
